Berman Contemporary is delighted to participate with 2 booths at the eleventh edition of Investec Cape Town Art Fair, Africa’s largest art fair, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Berman Contemporary will show in its Main Booth (C15) how PAPER is inspiring contemporary artists and the huge diversity in their work. DuduBloom MoreLee-At Meyerov and Odette Graskie are showing us that the artworks made with paper are not just about cutting, folding, or putting a pencil on paper; they are also the result of the evolvement of their artistic process and use of innovative experiments. Odette Graskie will be unveiling her artist’s book, titled “Unfolding Together,” in our main booth at Investec Cape Town Art Fair. The book explores the complexity of portraiture researched in her MA dissertation Portraiture as Intervention: Drawing the Dialogical Relationship between Artist, Sitter and Artwork.

The new work of Chrisél Attewell will be presented in a Solo Booth (S7), which invites the viewer to take a journey from darkness to light. Against the backdrop of the present climate crises and unstable ecosystems, she is featuring new works and bringing together darkness and light, rain and sun, sand and stones, day and night. The works appear as organic landscapes and another path is still possible, in the eye of the storm.

A PERFORMATIVE DRAWING EVENT WITH ODETTE GRASKIE | INVESTEC CAPE TOWN ART FAIR VIP PROGRAMME

Date: 18th of February at 1:30 – 2:30pm
Location: Main Booth (C15)

Drawing Sessions is an interactive performance with Odette Graskie. The artist explores the presence between the participant and the artist, which she will capture in a portrait.

Odette Graskie invites the audience to take part in her portraiture drawing practice. A performative drawing event as a visual art form, questions ideas of agency, trust, conventions of portraiture and the relationship through eye contact with strangers. With a greater focus on capturing the connective moment between the artist and participant, likeness becomes secondary to the affective and playful layers involved in the interaction. The drawing becomes an embodiment of the short moment between the participant and the artist.

The portraits become a part of the artist’s collection of drawings which are reworked and hand-assembled in bigger bodies of sculptural work. In exchange for participation, the artist gives those portrayed a limited photographic print of one of her artworks.
