Contours Unveiled marks the opening of Berman Contemporary in Cape Town, extending a line that has travelled from Johannesburg to the Cape, not as a boundary, but as a gesture of connection, a curve, a fold, a quiet embrace. This inaugural exhibition positions the gallery not as a newcomer, but as a necessary new voice in the city’s cultural landscape, dedicated to amplifying women artists and offering a space where experimentation, reflection, and care are at the centre.
At the heart of the exhibition is the act of tracing and unveiling, where each work exists in a state of becoming, unfolding, fragmenting, and gathering again. Teabags expand into constellations of care, glass flows and hardens into luminous stone, and fabric unwinds to reveal hidden architectures. These materials, charged with labour, memory, and gesture, are unsettled through repetition, layering, burning, and release, so that fragility becomes strength, the ordinary opens into intimacy, and absence quietly emerges as presence.
Contours here are not fixed borders but thresholds: crossings between permanence and transformation, vulnerability and resistance, memory and imagination. They echo the ways women shape their worlds, delicate or forceful, fragmentary or continuous, but always present. Together, they reveal voices that are central, not peripheral, to contemporary artistic discourse.
Contours Unveiled sets the tone for Berman Contemporary’s future in Cape Town, a site for dialogue, discovery, and resonance, where women’s practices are given the visibility, critical engagement, and recognition they have long deserved. It is a space where matter is reimagined, where the everyday becomes extraordinary, and where the gallery itself becomes both platform and community.
