Phumzile Buthelezi was born in 1976 during the Soweto Uprising. Her formal education began at Thulani Primary School where, at the age of seven, she won 3rd prize in a drawing competition. The formation of any species is mostly the combination of two or more factors that exist in a certain atmosphere, moulded by the presence or lack of a specific climate. The modern woman has been pushed to become a new species because of the climate she finds herself in. Her work is a manifestation of such aspects because it is a convergence of different types of materials through the use of different tools and traditional skills, in order to give birth to new species of artwork.
