EXHIBITION OPENING | HATCHED
Join us for opening and walkabout with the artists
11:00 for 11:30am on Saturday the 12th of March 2022
A riveting encounter with Mamela Nyamza’s critically acclaimed, autobiographical, tour-de-force dance performance – Hatched – sparked in Robyn Denny, the idea for an enduring cross-disciplinary collaboration with this renowned performing artist from Gugulethu.
For Robyn and Mamela, complex ties to their late mothers, and an appreciation for the phoenix-like capacity of women’s bodies to alchemise the base metal of patriarchy, formed the basis for their creative synergy. The immersive experience of this series paired Robyn Denny’s richly dynamic inks with Nyamza’s performance in their collaborative film.
Market Theatre hosts Andizi, performed by Mamela Nyamza, Lulu Mlangeni, and Thandazile Sonia Radebe

“Bring back our heritage!” That’s the message from African countries as they continue to demand the return of historical artefacts looted during colonialism. But how do you right the wrongs of centuries ago? That’s the question facing some European states as they discover that repatriating heritage is surprisingly complex. Filmed at Berman Contemporary.

CORNÉ VENTER
We would like to welcome Corné Venter, our latest artist to join The New Vanguard.
Corné Venter was born in Johannesburg, and graduated from Vanderbijlpark college with a NSC fine art in 1997. The following year he enrolled as a fine art student at Pretoria Technikon (now TUT) and received his B-tech fine arts degree in 2001, majoring in painting and printmaking.
|
|
|
Corné has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and was part of the final selection for the Sasol New Signatures competition (2001 and 2004) hosted at the Pretoria art museum.
After several years practising and teaching graphic design (as a part time junior lecturer at VUT) he moved back to Johannesburg and recently completed his MaVA (2022) at the University of Johannesburg. His current practice explores issues of identity and healing in which he uses concepts of self dialogism and palimpsest to investigate these and other themes apparent in his artmaking. His multimodal approach focusses on deconstructing materials and traditional methods in order to explore meaning in his work.

GINA VAN DER PLOEG
Tankwa Artscape Residency | 2022
During my time in the Tankwa Artscape residency, I wish to focus on this horizontal plain as manifesting from the striking horizon lines and gentle undulations of the landscape. Using weaving and trailing, knotted strings to gently connect various focal points in the landscape, I will explore the horizontal: the earth and the details that comprise it (rocks, sands, boulders, shrubs, succulents).
|
|
|
Throughout this process, I will spend time lying on my stomach, meaningfully noticing, caring for, and being guided by the landscape’s natural features. Spread along the earth, I will knot fibers and gently lift rocks; I will sit cross-legged and hunched over, weaving from an anchor point in a strong little shrub. I will be on the horizontal, giving value to the horizontal and taking cues from a place where and tradition in which spiritual practices have been doing this for centuries.
