Athenkosi Kwinana as a speaker on the Freedom Thursdays Panel Discussion on Albinism and Democracy: Reflections from Heritage Month
I had the privilege of participating in a panel discussion focused on the theme of “30 Years of Democracy for Persons with Albinism” during the Heritage Month Reflective Conversations in the third week of September. This event coincided with Albinism Awareness Month, highlighting the ongoing challenges and triumphs faced by individuals with albinism in South Africa.
Facilitated by Mmabatho Ramagoahi, the panel aimed to engage in meaningful dialogue about the state of our nation and the moral issues affecting persons with albinism. We examined the detrimental impacts of harmful traditional, religious, and societal practices on our lives. The discussion featured insights from notable figures in the field, including Antoine Glikeohn, Executive Director of the Global Albinism Alliance, and Lorraine Tshuma, Founder of the We Are People Foundation.
It was an enlightening experience to share my journey as a visual activist, advocating for awareness and acceptance within our society. I believe that through continued conversations and collective action, we can create a more inclusive and respectful environment for all individuals, regardless of their differences.
